Seventeen outstanding researchers will receive $53.7 million in research funding for the 2021 Australian Laureate Fellowships awarded through the Australian Research Council (ARC).
Designed to support the highest-quality researchers, the Australian Laureate Fellows scheme provides financial assistance through project funding, salary supplement and salary related costs researchers may struggle with.
Minister for Education and Youth Alan Tudge said the Fellowships recognise some of our most admired researchers who conduct world-class research that improves our quality of life.
“This program provides financial support to conduct ground-breaking research here in Australia, particularly in areas of national priority. It also provides the opportunity to mentor our up-and-coming early career researchers,” Minister Tudge said.
Two of this year’s recipients are outstanding female researchers, who will also receive funding to undertake an ambassadorial role to mentor early career researchers.
Professor Sundhya Pahuja and Professor Yun Liu will be provided with extra funding to encourage other women and researchers to take up and look towards a career in research.
Professor Pahuja was awarded for her research in international law with focus in democratic standards and legal accountability. Professor Liu was awarded for her research in building new nanoscale interactions to improve future functional materials.
"Congratulations to our 2021 Australian Laureate Fellows who all have made meaningful contributions in research and their careers. I look forward to seeing their research make a real difference to our lives and improve our nation as a whole.”
