The Hedberg Performing Arts Precinct at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) has officially opened, thanks to $67 million partnership between the Gutwein and Morrison Governments.

Minister for Education and Youth Alan Tudge said the combined funding would position Hobart and UTAS as a leader in creative, cultural, and performing arts.

“The Hedberg is a world-class facility that will bring students, staff and industry together with access to cutting edge technology like recording equipment, professional studios, and performance venues,” Minister Tudge said.

“It will help students put their skills and creativity into practice and increase their chance of getting into a job in the arts by linking them with local and international professionals.”

Senator for Tasmania Eric Abetz welcomed the Australian Government’s commitment of $37 million toward the cost of the joint development.

“The Hedberg is a testament to the power of collaboration between the Australian and Tasmania governments,” Senator Abetz said.

“The facility will support employment outcomes for students in the region and boost the local performing arts economy through live shows and theatre.

“Today’s formal opening of The Hedberg may have been delayed last year by COVID-19, but today will long be remembered as a landmark day for UTAS, for Hobart and for Tasmania.”
