- Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills
Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills Karen Andrews visited National Rugby League (NRL) headquarters today to acknowledge the wide range of Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications involved in preparing for the game’s semi-finals.
Minister Andrews met a range of staff, as well as some current and former players from the NRL whose VET qualifications are contributing to the success of the organisation’s operations.
“It’s great to see the NRL taking the time at such an important point in its finals series to promote the opportunities that vocational education and training presents,” Minister Andrews said.
“VET produces dynamic careers, and the NRL is no exception. From the food prepared for the team by the chefs, to the fitness trainers and coaches, event organisers, administration and retail staff, to the groundsmen and turf managers – without these people, the game would not go on.”
Minister Andrews thanked the NRL for their continued support in promoting the value of VET, especially through its commitment to the Australian Apprenticeships Ambassadors program.
“Our Australian Apprenticeships Ambassadors program boasts 15 current and former NRL players who have volunteered their time to promote the many benefits of completing an apprenticeship or traineeship,” Minister Andrews said.
“While natural talent and hard work have provided them with the skills to succeed on the field, VET is giving many players the skills to succeed off the field and beyond their playing careers.”
Minister Andrews was joined at the event by Australian Apprenticeships Ambassador and former Canterbury Bulldogs and Sydney Roosters winger, Gavin Lester. Mr Lester discussed his journey from carpentry apprentice to managing director of Molly Madar Pty Ltd.
“For most people football is a part time job or a hobby, but when you complete a VET qualification you have that knowledge and certificate forever,” Mr Lester said.
