The Turnbull Government’s 2016-17 Budget commits $12 million over four years to support the implementation of Australia’s National Strategy for International Education 2025 – backing one of our five key economic super-growth sectors.

Under the Coalition Government the international education sector is thriving – growing at an average of 11.5 per cent per annum, compared with only 3.58 per cent under the previous Labor Government.

On 30 April 2016, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Julie Bishop MP and I launched the National Strategy for International Education 2025, the Australian International Education 2025 (AIE2025) market development roadmap and the Australia Global Alumni Engagement Strategy.

Together, these international education strategies will help Australia build on our strengths in education service delivery and ensure Australia remains a top destination of choice for international students into the future.

The $12 million allocated in the Budget will help implement the National Strategy, underpinning the opportunities Australia has to continue to grow its share of the international education market, which is one of our top export earners.

The National Strategy will further strengthen Australia’s internationally recognised education and research systems, increase global partnerships and drive collaboration with local communities, including raising the profile of regional Australia and the excellent education and research opportunities offered by regionally-based institutions.

The Turnbull Government recognises the significant opportunity for expansion in the borderless education sphere. Complementing the National Strategy, the AIE2025 roadmap will position Australia to capitalise on new opportunities and markets over the next decade.

Australia’s international education sector is already worth more than $19 billion to the national economy and supports more than 130,000 jobs in cities and regions throughout Australia.

It is important we continue to support the sector and build valuable people-to-people links through these new strategies, to ensure that all levels of education services become more adaptive, innovative and globally engaged.

As Australia transitions to a knowledge and service based economy, these strategies will strengthen and grow Australia’s international education sector over the coming decade.
