Honouring a top Aussie teacher

The Morrison Government offers its congratulations to Australian teacher Yasodai Selvakumaran who was a finalist for the $1 million Global Teacher Prize.

Ms Selvakumaran is a graduate of Bathurst High School and is currently a humanities teacher at Rooty Hill High School, Sydney.

Member for Calare Andrew Gee said Ms Selvakumaran had done Bathurst proud.

"Ms Selvakumaran has said her teachers at Bathurst High School inspired her to become a teacher, and now she is making a difference in the lives of her students and is one of the best in the world at her job," Mr Gee said.

"On behalf of the Calare community, I’d like to congratulate Ms Selvakumaran for her nomination and say thank you. This is also on opportunity to reflect on the incredible job that all of our teachers are doing educating our children."

Minister for Education Dan Tehan said Ms Selvakumaran was an inspiration.

"We know that teachers can make the biggest difference to a child’s education and for Ms Selvakumaran to be recognised with a global nomination is testament to her and everyone who has helped her along the way," Mr Tehan said.

"Ms Selvakumaran is proof that Australia produces some of the best teachers in the world. Our teachers are passionate about education and we need to ensure the best and the brightest want to become teachers and want to stay teaching."

The Global Teacher Prize received more than 10,000 nominations from 179 countries.
