Australia’s universities continue to produce high-quality research, according to international benchmarking.

Minister for Education Dan Tehan today released the State of Australian University Research 2018–19: ERA National Report by the Australian Research Council (ARC).

The report found Australia is increasingly performing above world standard in terms of research quality. Highlights include:

  • More than half (57 per cent) of units assessed in broad discipline areas were rated above or well above world standard.

  • Australia exceeds international standards in 11 broad disciplines including technology, mathematics, medicine, engineering and in sciences relating to our earth and environment.

  • The number of publications submitted for ERA assessment exceeded 500,000 for the first time.

“A strong university research sector makes Australia stronger from health discoveries that save lives to developing new technologies that lead to job and business opportunities,”
Mr Tehan said.

“Our Government is investing $9.6 billion in research and development this financial year, and this report confirms Australian universities are producing world-class research.

“The Morrison Government can afford to invest in world-leading research that improves the lives of every Australian because we are keeping the economy strong.”

More details about ERA 2018 are available from the ARC website.
