The Morrison Government will fund research to record the unique Indigenous rock art found in the Laura Sandstone Basin in Cape York.
Minister for Education Dan Tehan today announced the Morrison Government was providing $1.342 million to fund the project.
“This project will record the unique Indigenous rock art from an area of Australia that is virtually unexplored from an archaeological perspective,” Mr Tehan said.
“Our Government is funding a research collaboration that will see Traditional Owners, ranger groups and land mangers working with researchers to improve the promotion, conservation and management of our Indigenous history.
“This researh will produce data of national scientific and social significance that will help us better understand our first Australians.”
Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said Cape York’s rock art could become another significant tourist attraction for the region.
“This project will promote economic and social opportunities for Indigenous communities in remote parts of Cape York,” Mr Entsch said.
“Rock art tours are a popular tourist attraction in our region, and this project could unlock more opportunities, leading to business growth and job creation while also ensuring the areas are managed and protected.”
The Morrison Government is providing $4.5 million to fund eight research projects through the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Projects scheme.
