Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills, the Hon Karen Andrews today officially opened Australia’s largest and most prestigious skills competition.
Held in Melbourne, the 2016 WorldSkills Australia National Competition brings together 480 of Australia’s best apprentices to compete in more than 50 skill areas, including carpentry, cooking and web design.
“WorldSkills helps to inspire and engage young people or those contemplating a career change,” Minister Andrews said.
“It also informs parents about career opportunities available in vocational education and training, and encourages them to see it as a viable career path for young people.
“It also encourages employers to support training opportunities for their employees.”
Minister Andrews said participants were competing for a chance to represent Australia at the 44th WorldSkills Competition in Abu Dhabi.
“Gold medallists will become Australian Apprenticeships Ambassadors, joining well known celebrities like AFL legend Kevin Sheedy, Scott Cam and Neil Perry in promoting and raising the status of VET,” Minister Andrews said.
Minister Andrews said expert advice would be on offer at 25 industry exhibits, while attendees could also try their hand at 13 Try’aSkill activities including floristry, bricklaying and landscape construction.
“I encourage all members of the public to take the time to check out the competition and see the best skills in Australia on display, talk to industry experts and have a go at a new skill – you never know where it might lead.”
The competition runs from tomorrow until Saturday, 8 October at the Melbourne Showgrounds.
